This National Historic Landmark in lower Manhattan, the African Burial Ground, is the only preserved african burial site in an urban area in the U.S. Discovered during a 1991 federal constructon project, the skeletal remains of over 400 free and enslaved men, women and children of African descent were found, removed, and reburied. It’s proof positive that slavery was not strictly a southern phenomena and that Africans were a major presence in colonial New York City (approximately 20% of the city’s population around the time of the American Revolution). Plans are currently in the works to build a memorial on the site (see photo above).

The Burial Ground Site is located at 290 Broadway between Duane Street and Reade Street. For more information call 212-337-2001 or visit African Burial Ground.
