The Atlanta University Center (AUC) is the largest consortium of African-American higher education in the U.S. Located in Atlanta’s West End Historic District, the AUC is comprised of six African-American educational institutions including Clark-Atlanta University, Morehouse College, the Morehouse School of Medicine, Spelman College, Morris Brown College and the Interdenominational Theological Center. These institutions not only pioneered in offering educational opportunities to African Americans, but have been a progressive force in the development of the black community in Atlanta and throughout the nation.
Member campuses of the Atlanta University Center boast a distinguished group of alumni, among them Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the N.A.A.C.P.’s Walter White, writer James Weldon Johnson, opera singer Matwilda Dobbs, Children’s Defense Fund President Marian Wright Edelman, filmmaker Spike Lee and Maynard H. Jackson, Jr., first African-American mayor of Atlanta.
