Before the Mayflower
The book, “Before the Mayflower” traces black history from its origins in western Africa, through the transatlantic journey and slavery, the Reconstruction period, the Jim Crow era, and the civil rights movement, to life in the 1990s. The author, Lerone Bennett Jr., has written over 10 books, including Forced Into Glory: Abrahams Lincoln’s White Dream, winner of the 2002 American Book Award, Great Moments in Black History, Pioneers in Protest, The Shaping of Black America, and What Manner of Man. He is also the executive editor emeritus of Ebony magazine. He lives in Chicago
There is so much more to African American history than being enslaved and fighting for civil rights. This book helps shed some light on this topic not often covered in history books, let alone during Black History Month.
