Located across the border in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, the Buffalo Soldiers Monument was dedicated by General Colin Powell in 1992. The monument honors the 9th and 10th Cavalry comprised of African American Soldiers, formed in 1866. These troopers proved their bravery and valor throughout the Indian Wars, winning the respect of the Cheyenne warriors who named them “Buffalo Soldiers,” a badge of honor.
