First opening its doors to the public during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, the California African American Museum (CAAM) features the history, heritage and culture of African Americans in California and the Nation. Currently occupying over 45,000 square feet, the CAAM has plenty to offer visitors from paintings to sculptures to multimedia installations.
Noteworthy objects from CAAM’s History Collection include artifacts and photographs from the estate of the trailblazing golfer Bill Spiller; items from the estate of legendary jazz performer Ella Fitzgerald; theater programs highlighting the highly acclaimed performances of Katherine Dunham, Dorothy Dandridge, Duke Ellington, and Janet Collins; and artifacts and photographs from the estate of Los Angeles’ first and only African American Mayor Tom Bradley. Admission is FREE!
