
Bessie Coleman, African American Woman Aviator

Among Washington D.C.’s most popular museums, the National Air and Space Museum features the ”Black Wings: The American Black in Aviation” exhibit. Located inside the Pioneers of Flight Gallery, the exhibit has over 100 photographs tracing black achievement in aviation, including such luminaries as Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Coleman (1892 – 1926), popularly known as “Queen Bess,” was the first African American woman to become an airplane pilot, and the first American woman to hold an international pilot license. Admission is free.
