Built in 1859 and once part of a complex of buildings, the Old Slave Mart (originally referred to as the shed) is the only slave auction gallery in South Carolina still in existence. The last slave was auction off there in 1863. Today, this slave auction site turned museum features over 100 items such as shackles, badges, anklets and a neck collar used to restrain and control slaves, along with a document listing the cost of ”a Negro.” The Museum is currently under renovation, but will soon be reopen to the public. Call ahead to check on the status.
