Founded in 1971 by the now legendary music production team of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, Philadelphia International Records earned world wide acclaim by showcasing what’s been widely referred to as Philadelphia Soul or “The Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP), combining gospel, soul and disco with elaborate musical arrangements and socially conscious lyrics.

Gamble and Huffs repertoire of over 3,000 songs included dozens of instantly recognizable hits. Every time you hear “Back Stabbers,” “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now,” “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” “Love Train,” “Use To Be My Girl,” “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine,” “Soul Train Theme Song,” “Me and Mrs. Jones,” “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” and “When Will I See You Again?” — you’re listening to The Sound of Philadelphia. The label’s artist roster included Billy Paul, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Jerry Butler, Lou Rawls, McFadden & Whitehead, Patti Labelle, Phyllis Hyman, Teddy Pendergrass, The O’Jays, and Thelma Houston. It all eventually paid off in spades for Gamble & Huff earning them over 175 gold and platinum album, as well as over 80 number on pop singles.

Be sure to check out the The Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP) Souvenir Shop when you’re town which stocks vinyl records, 45s and other music memorabilia. Two of the more noteworthy features include allowing customers to step into a recording booth to record live songs over their favorite TSOP tracks, as well as special-order gold and platinum Gamble-Huff albums customized with their name engraved on the records.
