Usually held for several weeks in mid-May and ending Memorial Day weekend, the Atlanta Jazz Festival is arguably the largest FREE jazz festival in the country, if not the world, featuring top entertainers, an artist market, and children’s activities. Past performers include Stanley Jordan, Max Roach and Nancy Wilson.

Satchmo Summerfest | New Orleans, LA
Always held during the first weekend of August, the Satchmo Summerfest in New Orlean’s French Quarter is the premier American jazz festival celebrating the life, music, and legacy of the city’s native son, Louis Armstrong. The summerfest’s musical program features traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, and brass bands on four stages located on the grounds of the Old U.S. Mint. This year’s festival goers will also witness the long anticipated return of the children’s stage with more family-oriented fare, as well as a speakers seminars. Jazz Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL

The Jazz Institute of Chicago was founded in 1969 by a small band of jazz fans, writers, club owners and musicians who came together to preserve the historical roots of the Chicago’s jazz music when rock ‘n roll had become the reigning cultural and financial force in American music. The Institute sponsors the world renown Chicago Jazz and Heritiage Festival, as well as student workshops (”Jazz Links”) that pair promising high school jazz musicians with their world class professional counterparts. Definitely a must visit for hard-core jazz enthusiasts.
