Directed by the legendary dancer and choreographer Judith Jamison, the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater celebrates its 50th year of bringing African-American cultural expression and the American modern dance tradition to the world’s stages. The 18-month celebration will include a U.S. tour featuring special events, promotions and collaborations. The troupe officially begins its five week season at the New York City Center this December. The Duke Ellington House, or Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington House, is where Duke Ellington, the famous African American composer and jazz musician, resided from 1939 through 1961. The building and/or Ellington’s apartment, Apartment 4A, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The six-story, elevator building on the southwest corner of St. Nicholas Avenue and W. 157th Street.

Harlem Gospel Choir, New York, NY

One of the most preeminent gospel choirs in the world, the internationally renown Harlem Gospel Choir is a showcase of the best choir singers and musicians from various Harlem churches. Fusing gospel, jazz and the blues, the choir was founded by Allen Bailey in 1986, who got the idea for the group while attending a MLK Birthday Celebration in Harlem’s renown Cotton Club. The Harlem Gospel Choir has performed for Pope John Paul II in New York’s Central Park and for Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, as well as with many of today’s most popular recording artists, such as Bono and U2, among others.
